New Mine Community Trust
According to the Financial Review (15/8/08) a Chinese Mining Company has won the tender to explore the Watermark allotment near Gunnedah in North West NSW. Part of China Shenhua Energy Company's winning tender included the promise of $1 million per year to a regional community trust. The company still has a number of battles on its hands due to strong local anti-mining feeling, however if or when it is approved, there will be potential for some major community projects in that region, so stay tuned to FundBase......

FarmReady Announced

The Australian Department of Agriculture, Farming and Fisheries have devoted $26.5 million to training farmers in preparation for climate change as part of the $130 million Australia's Farming Future initiative, in a bid to keep the agricultural sector resilient in the future.

Primary producers will be able to apply for grants of up to $1,500 each financial year to attend approved training courses, which will help to cover travel, accommodation and childcare costs.

Re-Tooling for Climate Change
The Re-Tooling for Climate Change program ($75m over 4 years) will be targeted at assisting Australian manufacturers improve their production processes, reduce their energy use and cut carbon emissions. Australian small and medium sized manufacturers will be able to apply for grants from $10,000 to $500,000 for initiatives such as investing in energy efficient manufacturing tools, small scale co-generation plants and water recycling.

The Re-Tooling for Climate Change program will be available for application soon. Documentation and information about the program are currently being developed.

Horticultural Awards
Nominations for the 2008 Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) Awards are now open. The HAL Awards include the Graham Gregory Award for excellence in horticulture which carries a $10,000 cash prize and could be used to progress local projects that involved horticulture. Think laterally about how you or your group may be able to use this prize to further your goals.

Nominations close on Monday October 6 and the winners will be announced at the Future Focus Industry Summit to be held at the Sydney Convention Centre at Darling Harbour, Sydney on November 24 and 25.

Optus Connecting Communities Grant
This program provides grants of up to $5,000 to not-for-profit organisations, to help reduce social isolation and reconnect disengaged youth.

There are two streams of funding:
1. Social Inclusion - social isolation includes: geographical, social, physical and emotional. Projects will be funded that promote and enhance social inclusion such as building social networks, increasing participation in community or family life, or providing access for services such as health and education.
2. Disengaged youth - projects aimed at helping youth up to 25 years who are disengaged, to reconnect with society and build a better future for themselves.

Will not fund operating or administration costs.
